6 Essential Things You Need to Succeed as an Animator

Every field has ups and downs, no field will be easy when we start off. Not everyone succeeds, yet there are common threads that tie those who do together! There are people who have a massive desire and passion for tackling their challenges internally and externally—making their dreams come to life. Here are six critical areas of personal development in those who succeed as animators.

- The beginner’s mind
This is one point we all firmly believe. As an Animation Mentor, we call this Continuous Improvement, and it’s one of the core values of being a successful animator. One should never feel like he/she has “arrived.” There’s always more to learn, more to add, more to explore. When you get stuck, look for ways to pivot your thinking, and you will find renewed inspiration.
- The experience to yield
There’s a famous quote that states, “It is in giving that we receive.” We love this and find it so applicable. Those who give comments and share their knowledge are those who seem to accelerate quicker. Those who hoard information only go so far. When you learn something that stimulates your skills — share that knowledge. You’ll be surprised at what comes of it.
- Determination
Don’t lose focus; it’s just a matter of time. That may be easier said than done, yet remember that you can never stop learning, practising, and growing. Have patience and also have attention to details. Be sure to water your mind and feed it goodness whenever possible.
- Confidence
Most likely, there will always be a “gremlin voice” in our heads that expresses our insecurities — and most likely, there’s no way ever entirely to turn off that voice. So think about “turning the volume down.” If it’s yelling at ten max, then what would it be like to turn it down to a 5? Or even a 7? Over time, learn to identify the voice and slowly begin to turn it down. Be confident about presenting your work, have great communication skills that will make people be your listener. Having being honest with your work will always help you become confident with it.
- Balance
The life of an animator should not be all about the latest animated movie. Be it life or profession, having a balance is very important. Those who succeed have a passion for being just as much or more than they do for animation. Be sure to cultivate YOU. These six little things could take a lifetime to nurture. Which one are you going to tackle today? Think about it, get inspired, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
- Humility
The last but the most important is humility. Attitude plays a major role in your success. Who wants to work with a non-professional animator? I don’t, and I’m sure you don’t. That does not mean that you need to let someone walk all over you, either. Being modest is one of the most difficult characters. Build confidence in who you are, share your thoughts, and respect those of others. Remember, there’s more than your way to tackle a challenge.
It is said that if your core is strong, you cannot be defeated easily. These few characteristics are the core feature any person should have if they opt for being professional to their work.
